EDVAC
EDVAC was the first computer that stored both its programs and working data in the same location, this new idea was called the Von Neumann Architecture. This idea is still widely used today.
Magnetic Core Memory
By 1954 magnetic core memory was quickly becoming the favorite way to store data in computers, this new trend would last well into the 1970's.
The Small Scale Experimental Machine
The EDVAC while the first to encorporate Von Neumann architecture into its construction was not the first to operate with it. The Small-Scale Experimental Machine nicknamed the "Manchester Baby" was built by Frederick Williams and Tom Kilburn at the University of Manchester in 1948. A year later came the Manchester Mark 1 which was a complete system. And 2 years later the Farranti Mark 1
MESM from the Soviet Union
In 1950 the Small Electronic Calculating Machine was created at the Kiev Institute of Electrotechnology. It could perform 3000 calculations per second, a year before that the CSIRAC out of Australia, the CSIRAC is currently the oldest computer still in existance and was the first computer to play digital music. Finally in 1951 a computer called the LEO I, developed by J. Lyons and Company was the first electronic computer programmed for a business application.
